Chinook and coho fishing are generally excellent in June, from the Fingers and Entrance all the way to Thrasher. Focus on depths of 110′ to 250′, adjusting as needed based on bait presence. Bottom bouncing is productive around structures, especially along the Entrance reefs, but always watch for bait schools and adapt your depth accordingly.

Skinny G spoons in patterns like Trash Can, Bon Chovy, Cop Car, Herring Aid, Green Herring Aid, and Trailhead are all solid producers. The newer Yes Bananas pattern performs well. If you prefer hoochies or cuttlefish, reliable choices include clear UV, T-Rex, green/blue Spatterback, Snot Rocket, Army Truck, and Glow White.

Jigging is well worth trying early in the season. Look for shallow bait schools, typically in 30′ to 80′ of water. Fish just below or alongside them and watch bird activity and surface disturbance. Last year, 1- to 2-oz half jigs produced excellent results.

Coho have not been especially abundant yet, but hatchery retention opens June 1. The Fingers, Neck Point, and Entrance are key areas to target. The same gear used for Chinook works well for coho, though a faster trolling speed is recommended.

When jigging, use an erratic motion—coho are aggressive and respond well to a fast, chasing presentation.

Lingcod and rockfish seasons are underway. Areas like Gabriola Reef and Entrance Reef offer ideal structure. Target pinnacles in 40′ to 180′ of water. Swimbaits such as 6-oz Max Shads or
Power Paddles are effective, though some anglers use herring on a spreader bar. Be sure to have a descending device ready and attached to a downrigger to safely release undersized fish or bycatch. Failure to do so can result in a fine of $863.

Commercial prawning is also in progress. If you’re setting traps, focus on depths of 320′ to 380′. A combination of pellets and half a can of Carlyle works well with a 3- to 4-hour soak time. Be mindful of regulations—fines are $10 per prawn over the limit, and traps must be equipped with proper escape mechanisms and rot cord.
