Historically, May is the best month for Chinook fishing in Area 17. At this time of year, most of these Chinook range from 8 to 16 lbs and are US-bound. Fish can be found both offshore in 600′ to 800′ of water and inshore in the standard 100′ to 200′ range. The offshore fishery runs two to three miles out, from the Fingers to Porlier Pass, with downrigger depths typically between 130′ and 250′. Structure at Thrasher, Entrance, and the Fingers consistently holds fish in the 160′ to 220′ range.

My top lure choices include Skinny G spoons in Trash Can, Bon Chovy, No Bananas, Trailhead, and Cookies and Cream. For hoochies, UV Clear, Green Spatterback, Army Truck, and Glow White are also favourites. We had a strong herring spawn this year, with many anglers reporting full buckets of good-sized bait. As of late March, some spawns are still being observed.

Lingcod and rockfish open May 1. The structure around Entrance and Gabriola Reefs provides ideal habitat for both species. Lingcod tend to hold on pinnacles in depths ranging from 30′ to 130′. Try jigging or trolling swimbaits (6 to 14 oz) or using jigs with twist tails for these bottom dwellers. Rockfish occupy similar terrain, but smaller baits are recommended.

DFO officers will be actively checking for valid 2026–2027 BC Tidal Waters licences with salmon tags, which came up for renewal on April 1, as well as required descending devices. Make sure your gear is onboard and easily accessible. It’s also wise to carry a backup descending device—losing one means you must stop fishing. Failure to comply may result in a significant fine (currently $863).

Prawning has remained productive in the area, with solid numbers and good-sized catches. Keep in mind that the commercial prawn fishery typically begins in May. I generally avoid prawning during peak commercial activity. As always, check local regulations and subareas, and ensure your prawn traps are up to date.
