The salmon sport fishing season in the Pacific Rim area of West Coast Vancouver Island is now officially underway. Late April and May on this rugged but scenic coastline are most often viewed by sport anglers as the true beginning of saltwater fishing opportunities. According to most pre-season indicators and forecasts, the 2026 season for Chinook and Coho will look very much like the last few years, which provided “excellent” sport fishing. Sockeye fishing in the Alberni Inlet should also be highly productive, with an impressive 750,000 Sockeye expected to return to the Somass River system.

Many areas inside the surf line close to Ucluelet and throughout Barkley Sound have already provided some great fishing days for feeder Chinook, as well as the early summer-spring run of Chinook salmon migrating to the massive watersheds to the south. Migrating salmon bound for the vast Columbia River system and even Puget Sound consistently move into the island waters close to the mouth of the Ucluelet Harbor and across much of Barkley Sound, where they feed heavily on the region’s rich resources of baitfish.

As the spring months transition into summer, the return of southward-migrating Coho will add even more sport fishing opportunities for most West Coast Vancouver Island fishing locations. In late July and throughout the full month of August, forecasts for returning salmon to West Coast Vancouver Island are projected to be “GOOD.” The return of Chinook in the high teens and into the twenty-five-pound range is considered the average weight class for fish returning to West Coast Vancouver Island. These salmon move directly into the sound and then make their way to the Alberni Inlet before embarking on their final journey up the Somass River system.

Consequently, the 2026 sport fishing season in Barkley Sound and the Pacific Rim areas will rely heavily on waves of transient salmon headed to large southerly watersheds, combined with the strong returns of salmon expected in August and September to West Coast Vancouver Island rivers, creeks, and streams. Barkley Sound and the Alberni Inlet will undoubtedly reap the benefits of these salmon returns, providing some truly terrific sport fishing.

August will offer wonderful salmon sport fishing opportunities in 2026 for those who enjoy fishing in calm, pristine, and relatively scenic waters. Anglers will be treated to world-class salmon fishing along Vancouver Island’s West Coast and Inlet areas. The Port Alberni Inlet, the inshore areas of Ucluelet and Tofino, and Barkley Sound will be wonderful areas for sport fishing across many of the region’s top-tier “hotspots” in 2026.
